Where ideas

take shape

My art practice is rooted in curiosity, material exploration, and a love of process — and a belief that art is thinking made visible.

Working by hand grounds me. It’s a way to slow down, to explore ideas visually, and to engage with materials. This mindset influences both how I create and how I teach — showing students that the process is the learning.

Making as a

way of knowing

Portraits

I create one-of-a-kind portraits using colored pencil, pastel, and watercolor. I’m drawn to layering and blending techniques that help bring out subtle expression and personality. Whether working from life or reference, I see portrait-making as both a study in observation and a quiet form of connection.

Halloween Masks

This past Halloween (2024), my daughter — a creative force in her own right — wanted to go all in with a Coraline-inspired theme. She designed and made her own Wybie costume (pictured below), and I created 2’ tall wearable masks for ‘Other Mother’, ‘Other Father’, and the Cat. From there, we built an under-structure from PVC pipe to bring ‘Other Mother’ to life — with plenty of help from her on design and decoration. It was a fun collaboration and ended up being one of the most fun Halloweens we've had in our neighborhood! We had a blast and we’re already dreaming big for this coming Halloween — Let’s just say it may just blow 2024 out of the water.

Corpse Flower

2024 was a big year for my wife and CSU’s Plant Growth Facility, thanks to the rare and dramatic blooming of their Corpse Flower. In October, I was commissioned to create a Corpse Flower costume for a ‘RAM Talk’ in downtown Fort Collins — with plans for it to appear at future CSU Extension events as well.

I built the costume using roll foam and a lightweight air-dry foam clay, then finished it with layers of spray paint to bring out the flower’s distinct (and slightly ominous) look.

Homecoming Tree

October was a busy month overall … the Wellington Middle High School Student Council students and I, during my Master’s Program fall internship, created decorations for the Homecoming Dance including this 12’ tree!

Using concrete pilon forms, a pallet, cardboard, paper, balloons (and of course duct tape!), the students really brought this project to life. They truly knocked it out of the park — the tree was a huge hit!

Illustrations

From festive Christmas cards to retirement tributes and just-for-fun doodles, I love creating illustrations that bring a little joy and personality to the page. I work in watercolor, colored pencil, and pen and ink — layering detail, emotion, and a bit of whimsy into each piece. Whether it’s marking a milestone or simply making someone smile, I believe there’s something special about handmade art with heart.

Custom work is welcome when time allows. If you're interested in something personal, feel free to reach out — I always appreciate thoughtful requests and clear communication.

MOA FC Masks

Museum of Art, Fort Collins

For several years, I contributed to the Masks Fundraiser at the Museum of Art in Fort Collins, CO. I worked with found materials including fabric, wood, broken computer parts, and even greenery and leather. I was a fun challenge to build something unexpected from overlooked or maybe even items that would be otherwise discarded. Some pieces were wired to light up; others leaned into texture and shadow.

In more recent years, I collaborated with my daughter on the project. While the results varied, it was a meaningful way to share creative time together and explore new ideas. Each mask became its own experiment in transformation — part sculpture, part story.
